This time the Bob-Whites are visiting Uncle Andrew again, now in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri.  It’s raining as we find them moping about the lodge.  Trixie is in a foul mood, complaining about the weather and wondering what to do with her down time.  The others are content to just relax – Honey sewing curtains for the lodge windows, Jim and Brian playing darts and Mart perfecting his fishing line casting technique.  Trixie would rather be working to earn money for the latest Bob-White project – to buy a station wagon for the disabled kids to attend school.

Before long Trixie has found a magazine and in leafing through it discovers a contest to find some exotic ghost fish who may inhabit underground caves.  The reward is $500 which would help pay for the station wagon.  Before we know it she’s off and running to be first in line to win.  Caves abound in the Ozarks and the Bob Whites discover an unnamed cave to explore.

Linnie, the fourteen year old daughter of the lodge’s housekeeper who lives next door, suggests this cave to the group.  Uncle Andrew approves, hires a guide and buys equipment with which to explore the cave.  The Bob-Whites name it Bob-White Cave – natch!  Adventure abounds – a wildcat nearly attacks Trixie; a mysterious man’s boat upends itself, tossing him into the water; Linnie and her mother, Mrs. Moore, see ghosts and a fire nearly destroys their home.  So much to contend with – not to mention that the guide, Slim, isn’t a very nice guy, to put it mildly.  A ghostly, elusive presence prevails and causes more consternation among the group.

Enjoy number eleven in the series and learn all about spelunking.  For those who think caves are exciting, the book lists a nice bibliography.
