This story is a companion to Harriett the Spy. It’s not just about Harriett but about her
best friend, Beth Ellen. This is a
multi-layered tale. It takes place
during the summer when the two girls, about 12 years old, hang out and play
detective with a series of notes left about for random people to find based
upon what looks like quotes from the Bible.
They try to discover who the culprit is who is doing this weird
thing.
The other thread weaves curly-headed Beth Ellen’s retiring
nature with living at her grandmother’s and being reunited with her mother and
her new husband. Her mother insists Beth
Ellen be called Beth and proceeds to straighten her hair. Beth Ellen rebels. Well of course, it’s a book about growing up,
physically, mentally and emotionally.
And Beth Ellen comes through with flying colors in more ways than you
can imagine. A great sequel to Harriett
the Spy and one I enjoyed even better than the first in the duet.
